My passport or ID-card is lost or stolen abroad

If your Dutch passport or identity card (ID card) is lost or stolen abroad, the steps you need to take depend on how soon you will be travelling.

Are you travelling within 4 weeks?

If you need to travel within 4 weeks, you must apply for an emergency travel document.

I will not be travelling within 4 weeks

If you are not travelling within 4 weeks, you have time to apply for a new passport or ID card while you are abroad. On average applications take 3 weeks to process. You have to book an appoinment at a Dutch Embassy or Consulate. Take in consideration that it may take a few days to make the appointment.

If you are in a country without a Dutch Embassy or Consulate please get in touch with us.

Reporting the theft or loss

The Dutch government does not require you to report the theft or loss of your passport to the local police. But you are advised to do so. Ask for written proof that you have filed a police report. This document may be required by your insurer or the local authorities.

If you lost your passport due to a robbery, read the information on how to handle with robbery and theft while abroad.
